The ACP Business Climate facility (BizClim) is a joint initiative of the European Commission and the ACP Group of States under EDF funding. It aims specifically at boosting the business climate in ACP countries. Notably, it provides assistance to carry out studies, organize events (e.g. workshops, conferences, forums) and enhance capacity. In addition, BizClim acts as a think-tank, identifying best practice and disseminating information.

I lecture and research at the University of Birmingham and am in the process of setting up a network investigating children born of war (i.e. children whose fathers are foreign soldiers and whose mothers are local women). In this network, multidisciplinary research is carried out, involving historical, social science and political science approaches as well as medical and psychological, legal and philosophical/ethical perspectives. The network takes a global approach, investigating children born of war across nations and time. As part of the linked research project I am trying to obtain EU funding for a training network aimed at early career researchers. One of the conditions for the funding is that the postgraduates have the opportunity to obtain skills outside academia, for instance in industry, small business, consultancy, or other enterprises in the general sense of commercial economic actors. This is to ensure that the researchers leave the training network with the widest possible skills set, thus maximising their own potential and their employment prospects as well as their usefulness to the wider community beyond academia.
I am currently approaching commercial enterprises who might be interested in associating themselves with the research and training network and, eventually in providing some kind of skills training, be it in the form of secondments or be it through other training facilities. If EU funding were granted, there would be little or no resource implications for the companies, as the researchers would be fully funded not only for their academic research but also for such training activities.
If your organisation were interested, in principle, to learn more about the project with the prospect of getting involved, I would – of course - be more than happy to provide you with additional information about project, training, funding schemes and about my own academic work.
Kind regards,
Sabine Lee
