Source of my passion about the power of business to fight poverty
I am a social entrepreneur, I work for a company, I work for a philanthropic foundation, I am an academic, I am just interested
About my work:
I am a spacecraft propulsion engineer by day but my real excitement comes from what I work on outside work...
I am a technical team lead for Engineers Without Borders (EWB), a philanthropic organization focusing on engineering issues in the developing world. The team I work on is currently addressing water (transportation and treatment) and electricity issues for a community in Southern Malawi. This community of approximately 70,000 people includes a hospital, Health Sciences College, primary school, secondary school, and its surrounding villages for which we are addressing disease/conservation education, hand pumps, boreholes, piping, metering, rainwater catchment, electricity reliability and water treatment solutions. Complications with this project has shown me the issues inherent in aid and how proper water management could mitigate the issues we see here.
I am also on a small team working with the Center for Ocean Solutions, Stanford University, National University of Singapore, and Monterey Bay Aquarium on a technology-based entrepreneurial solution to curbing the illegal, unregulated, and unreported fishing around Pacific Island nations, more specifically Fiji and Palau.

Thanks so much! I can put you in touch with the Safe Water Director if that would help.
On the engineering, we're trying to develop a system to convert the irrigation from running on diesel to biofuel or veggie fuel (so it can run on the locally grown jatropha or palm oil). We need to shift away from the diesel they're currently using.
If you're looking for investment for your solution to address the illegal fishing, take a look at www.ccvf.org. We're helping expand the Clean Business Investment Summit - might be of interest to you.
Thanks so much!

Hi there! Love all that you're working on! I'm on the board of Safe Water International and they have some interesting programs they're developing for water filtration - take a look at www.safewaterintl.org. Also, we're working in Sudan on a reforestation/organic agricultural project and would love your input on the engineering of the irrigation systems if you're interested. Thanks so much!
