Business Fights Poverty

Corporate Social Responsibility and the World Cup in South Africa?

I would be very curious to get this community's perspective on the role of corporate social responsibility, particularly by corporate sponsors, and the upcoming World Cup in South Africa.

It's the first time the world's most viewed event is being hosted in Africa and I believe that governments and businesses have a greater responsibility to ensure that the games leave a lasting social and economic legacy for South Africa and the region.

I also personally think it would be a smart business strategy for companies to build good will and increase their brand awareness on a continent with a number of emerging economies.

What do you think?

Check out my blog at http://www.WorldCupCSR.wordpress.com if you're interested in the topic.

I look forward to the conversation.

Cheers,

John

Hi John, Thanks for coming up with this very interesting and yet committing issue, The business in Africa have a greater role to play as far as CSR is concerned. this is one of the areas not focused on in Africa. Given this opportuninty the business have to enhance their potential through giving back to the community in Africa, South Africa and show they stand out of the crowd in good brands for the rest of the world to have them always in mind even if they world cup is over. The world has very few knowledge of Africa and so Africa has a role through the organisation to ensure they have very interesting veiw and memory of Africa.

Well said John, I really do share your views it's a great opportunity for governments and corporate entities lining up up to cash in on sponsorship deals among other businesses during the world cup, to leave a lasting positive impact on the people, the community, the Country and the African region at large via corporate social resposibility.
