Business Fights Poverty

Every now and then something magical happens around you and you stop and stare in amasement. This happened for me today.

The start of the day was interesting a discussion on what is real corruption based on what happened in the UK Parliament that delved into the very suspect dealings of those working for the people. My comment was that if an employee had claimed expenses from my company, shareholders, community that they were not entitled to then it would be a matter for the police if got over £100 - it is serious, under that a rebuke is in order and closer scrutiny of claims. Many felt I was too generous.

Then I traveled off to an event for people in the process of loosing their jobs, many very scared and some just so panicked that they will need a great deal of help and support.

Then the magic started, three Polish workers approached to ask about how they set up their own business in the UK, they were clear about what they wanted to do but struggled with the problem of EU laws. So we looked at the skills and then the new qualifications they required. For them the chicken and egg problem is real to work they have to have certificates but to get the certificates they need work. The only suggestion was we need to explore volunteering to my surprise they jumped at the chance, then looking at the type of places to volunteer how they could help, this became infectious and by the end of the afternoon so many people going through real anxiety had said that giving a few hours a week to those who need their help would help them just as much.

Why was this magical? Well what started as a very flat day turned into a positive action packed afternoon, 72 people signing up for projects and activities all based on doing something for those who needed their help.

The powerful message has to be ask and people will put themselves out, let them know what they can do specifically and they will respond, the generousity of heart in difficult times is staggering.

One or two are now thinking of international volunteering activities because they have that freedom.

When we draw on that humanity we can tackle the most serious of problems - I left on a high.
